How do I get an API key?

Create an account, open the dashboard and create a named key. Save its secret immediately because it is shown once. Send it server-side in the Authorization header as a Bearer token. Every /api/v1 data endpoint requires authentication, and an account can hold up to five active keys.

After you have the key

Keys start with dk_ followed by 64 hexadecimal characters. Only a hash is stored, so a lost key cannot be shown again: create a replacement and revoke the old one. All keys on an account share one allowance.

Keep it in the environment, then test it

Why am I getting a 401 or 403?

A 401 means the key is missing, malformed or revoked. A 403 means an origin, plan or redistribution boundary, not a problem with the key.
